About the Society

The Society was formed in the late 1970s to foster local history research in Cleobury Mortimer.  Initially the members had leadership and guidance under Shropshire County Council's Adult Education programme, but over the last 15 years or so, the Society has been self-supporting.  During this time a huge amount of research work has been dome on all kinds of historical sources for the area, and as a result, the Society has gathered a considerable archive.

In 1991 the first of the Cleobury Chronicles was published, with articles reflecting the work of the members.   The Chronicles have appeared regularly since then, and the next is due in the autumn of 2004.

There are two lectures a year, one in the autumn and the other in the spring.  During the year, meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from September to May, 7.30pm to 9pm.   The present location is the Cleobury Mortimer Parish Hall.

The Chairman of the Society is Mr. Chris Potter, who succeeded the Revd. Bill Elliott in September 2003.  The Secretary is Dr. Pat Treves of Neen Savage.
