The history of Hopton Wafers

The Reverend James Payton wrote a short history of Hopton Wafers while he was Rector of St Michael and All Angels.

James Payton, MA (St John's College, Cambridge) was Rector of Hopton Wafers from 180-1913, having been a chaplain in the Royal Navy from 1873-1890, serving under Captain Woodward of Hopton Court.  He subsequently became vicar of Kinlet and rural dean of Stottesdon.  He was appointed to the honorary post of Prebendary of Hereford Cathedral.

Payton's article first appeared in the Transactions of the Shropshire Archaelogical Society in 1909 and was reprinted in pamphlet later that year.  Copyright in that edition has expired and it is believed that copyright has also expired in the original article.  The society is making this electronic edition available from the original reprint to widen readership of Payton's work.  It is only available to read online.
